Can I change my mind later?
Mostly you can. The cost depends entirely on when, and in which direction.
When you can switch

| Weeks 1–6 | Class 11 begins | Usually free. Schools expect some churn in the first month or two. Ask on day one, not in October. |
| By Sep–Oct | Board registration closes | Class 11 subjects get registered with your board. After this, changes need board permission and often are not granted. |
| After Class 11 | Repeating the year | Possible, but you redo Class 11 in the new stream. Costs one year. |
| Any time | Adding a subject through NIOS | The open-schooling route lets you add a subject — often Maths — alongside or after school. Slower, but it reopens doors. Check which colleges and exams accept it before relying on it. |
| At graduation | Choosing a different field | Free in most directions. This is the real reset point, and it is bigger than people think. |
What each switch costs

| Commerce or Humanities → Engineering | Hard | Needs Class 12 PCM. Realistically means adding subjects via NIOS, or repeating Class 11 and 12. |
| Commerce or Humanities → Medicine | Hard | NEET requires PCB in Class 11 and 12 as regular study. Same cost as above. |
| PCB → Engineering | Medium | Needs Maths. An additional subject or a NIOS subject can work — confirm acceptance with the specific exam and state. |
| PCM → Medicine | Medium | Needs Biology as an additional subject, accepted by NEET in many cases. Verify current rules before counting on it. |
| Any stream → civil services, business, media, teaching, arts | Easy | Nothing is closed. Stream is irrelevant here. |
The asymmetry, plainly. Doors close in one direction only: out of Science is easy, into Science is expensive. That is the real argument for taking Science if you are genuinely undecided — and the reason it is a terrible argument if you already know you would hate it. Two miserable years cost more than one repeated one.
