Where these numbers come from

The premise of this site is that students are handed survivorship stories instead of denominators. That only works if the denominators are real ones, so every applicant count, seat count and selection rate carries the document it came from and the date it was checked. Where there is no such document, the figure is left out rather than guessed. Preparation hours are the exception and are marked as estimates.

What the labels mean

Official
The exam body's own document — a results report, a press note, an information brochure.
Official-derived
A government record quoting the exam body, where the body's own document could not be reached.
Press
Reporting that names the official release it is quoting. Weaker, and marked as such.
Nothing at all
"Figures not sourced yet." The absence is information: it names a document still missing rather than filling the gap with a guess.

An uncharacterised citation is not accepted — it fails the build. Holding out for official everywhere would leave most of the catalogue silent: NTA's sites return 403 to automated requests, JoSAA serves its seat matrix through a query form, and the CLAT Consortium publishes no candidate counts at all. So the standard is that the weakness is labelled, not hidden.

The approximately marker

A leading approximately means the figure was rounded by the source itself ("about 20.8 lakh", "over three lakh"), or was estimated rather than counted. It propagates: any ratio built from an approximate figure carries the marker too. A rounded figure entered as an exact one is a small lie that compounds.
