Commerce · where it leads
What a commerce education actually leads to
Most people picture an accountant filing returns, and quite a few of them are right. What that picture leaves out is how wide this field is: the same starting point leads to auditing a company, pricing a loan, arguing about policy, and running something of your own. This is what the work is, what it costs, and who tends to find it bearable — written so that deciding against it counts as the page working.
The odds, before anything else. In CA Foundation 2025, 98827 people sat the exam for 14609 seats. The full figures, with sources →
How you actually get there
| When | What | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| After Class 12, and it can be begun alongside it | A professional qualification, taken in stages over several years | The unusual door on this site: you can start while you are still in school, and most people combine the early stages with a degree. It is examined in stages with a practical training period in the middle, so it is not a course you attend so much as a series of hurdles you clear while working. Its later stages are much harder than its first. |
| After Class 12 | A bachelor's degree, then a specialisation or a job | The ordinary door, and the one that defers the decision. A commerce or economics degree keeps every row below open, including the professional qualification, which a great many people begin during or after it rather than instead of it. |
There is no single answer here, and that is worth knowing before you choose a door. Chartered accountancy is a licensed profession: you are admitted by a professional body after its own examinations, you can be disciplined by it, and only members may sign certain things. Financial analysis and banking are credentialled but not licensed — qualifications help you get hired and nothing forbids the work without them. And running a business is gated by nothing at all: no exam, no register, no permission. One field, three completely different relationships with the idea of qualification.
What you can qualify with
No subject is specified — open to PCM, PCB, PCMB, Commerce, Arts.
Both entrances in this catalogue accept every stream, so nothing chosen at fifteen closes this field. The Commerce stream helps rather than qualifies — accounts and business studies make the first year lighter and are not required — and science students take these exams every year.
Four working lives from one starting point
| Branch | Decided | What the days are | Why anyone does it | Money | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chartered accountancy and audit The later stages of the qualification, and a period of supervised training. | at the professional exams, and often begun at seventeen | Detail, deadlines and documents, in a firm or in a company's own finance team. Long stretches of methodical checking punctuated by periods where everything is due at once, because tax and reporting dates are the same for everyone. | You are the person who checks. What a company says about itself is only worth something because somebody independent is willing to say it is true, and being that person is a real form of authority. | Modest and sometimes token during the training period, which lasts years and comes as a shock to people who expected the qualification to pay from the start. It improves sharply afterwards, and more so in a company than in practice early on. | People who are genuinely careful, who can find a discrepancy tedious and follow it anyway, and who do not need to be the one deciding. |
| Finance, banking and analysis A postgraduate degree or a professional certification, usually both eventually. | after the degree | Models, meetings and memos. A great deal of the work is assembling a case that someone more senior will act on, and defending its assumptions rather than its arithmetic. Hours are long in the parts of it that pay best. | You are paid to have a view and to be right about it often enough. Very few jobs tell you that plainly, and fewer still keep score. | The widest range in this field by some distance. The top of it is the reason people enter and is a small number of roles reached by a small number of people; the middle is comfortable and ordinary and is where nearly everyone actually is. | People who can hold uncertainty and still commit to a recommendation, and who are not upset by being measured. |
| Economics, policy and research A postgraduate degree, frequently a doctorate for the research end of it. | after the degree, and usually after a postgraduate one | Data, papers and argument. The unit of work is a question rather than a client, and the answer arrives in months. Closer in rhythm to academia than to the two rows above, even inside a bank. | The questions are the largest ones in this field — why some places are poor, what a tax actually does, who a policy helps — and the answers change what governments do. | Institutional and flatter than finance, with the research end paying least and caring least about it. Nobody takes this row for what it pays at twenty-five. | People who would rather answer a question properly than close a deal on Friday. |
| Running something | never formally, which is the difficulty | Everything, in no order, with nobody to escalate to. Selling, paying, hiring, apologising and doing the accounts at night. The variety is the appeal and the absence of a boundary is the cost. | What you build is yours, and the decisions are actually yours rather than recommended upwards. Almost nothing else in this field offers that. | Unpredictable in both directions, and for longer than most people plan for. It is the only row here where you can earn nothing for a year and be doing well. | People who can act without permission and tolerate the possibility of being wrong in public. It suits far fewer people than say they want it, and far more than are told they could. |
What it costs
| Cost | What that means in practice |
|---|---|
| It is treated as the stream for the undecided | Commerce is where a great many students are placed when nothing else was chosen, and that reputation follows the degree into the job market. The people who do well here are the opposite of undecided — and if you arrived by default, that is worth knowing now, when it is still cheap to become deliberate about it. |
| The professional qualification fails most people at least once | Its later stages have low pass rates by design, and clearing them takes many candidates several attempts across several years. That is normal and is not presented as normal, so people who fail once conclude they are unsuited when they are simply on the ordinary path. |
| The training years pay almost nothing | The supervised training period in the middle of the professional route lasts years and is paid at a level that surprises people who expected the qualification to be the hard part. Plan for it rather than discovering it. |
| A degree alone opens less than it looks | A commerce or economics bachelor's is common enough that it distinguishes nobody by itself. What decides outcomes is what is added to it — a professional qualification, a postgraduate degree, a certification, or demonstrated work — and deciding to add nothing is a decision people make by not noticing. |
| The best-paid corner is small and loud | The finance jobs that make this field attractive are a narrow slice of it, reached through a small number of institutions, and they are the ones films and social media are about. The rest of the field is larger, steadier and almost never described to a seventeen-year-old. |
If you felt resistance, that counts. Commerce is chosen by more Indian students than any other stream and examined by fewer of them than almost any. If you read the costs and felt recognition, that is worth something. If you are here because it was the option left when the others were discussed, that is worth naming now rather than in the second year of a degree nobody chose.
