What a computing degree actually leads to

Most people who say they want to work with computers mean one degree, and it is not this one. The four-year engineering route has its own page here. This is the other one — the three-year degrees, the ones that ask for a Class 12 pass rather than a rank, the ones a Commerce student can walk into — and it is bigger than the route everybody pictures. It is also described worse. This is what the work is, what it costs, and who tends to find it bearable, written so that deciding against it counts as the page working.

How you actually get there

It is what most people mean and it is not what this page is about.
After any bachelor's degree An MCA, or a master's in computer science The door people forget, and in this field it is the ordinary way to convert one kind of job into another — from support or testing into development. Those entrances are sat after a degree, so they are not in this catalogue. Worth knowing at seventeen because it means the first job is not the last word.

Nothing licenses you, and in this field the absence goes further than anywhere else on this site. There is no council, no register and no examination that entitles you to the work — which is engineering's answer — but engineering still uses the degree as the ticket to the interview, and here it frequently does not. What you can show you have built does the job a licence does elsewhere: it is checked directly, by people who will look at the thing itself. Two consequences, and they point in opposite directions. A student at an ordinary college with an ordinary degree can compete for the same work as anybody, which is true in almost no other field here. And a degree on its own, with nothing built alongside it, is worth less here than the same effort would be worth in law, medicine or teaching. The gate is not at the door of the profession. It is somewhere inside the three years, and nobody tells you when you have passed it.

What you can qualify with

Nothing, for the BCA route — a Class 12 pass, and the eligibility documents name no subject. Mathematics at Class 11 and 12 for most B.Sc. Computer Science degrees, and for the data-heavy half of the work. — open to PCM, PCB, PCMB, Commerce, Arts.

This is the most open field on the site after government service, and the belief that it is closed without science is the commonest wrong thing a reader arrives with. Check the exam pages, where the eligibility is quoted from the bodies' own documents. Mathematics still opens the second half of the field, so take it if you can — but not taking it does not shut the door the way it does in engineering.

Long stretches of being stuck, punctuated by the thing working. Much less solitary than the picture: most of the difficulty is agreeing what to build, not building it. You can make something on a laptop and have people using it next month, without anyone's permission and without a factory. Nothing else on this site turns an idea into a working thing that fast, and the feedback is immediate and honest — it works or it does not. The best-paid row here, and the reason most people arrive. The figures that circulate come from a handful of employers hiring a handful of graduates; line everybody up and the middle is a long way from them. It also starts lower for this route than for the engineering one, which is the next row's subject. People who can stay with a problem without being told they are close, and who are not humiliated by being wrong several times a day in front of a machine that is never tactful about it.
IT operations, cloud and support after the degree, often by which employer recruits at your college Tickets, alerts and other people's emergencies, on a rota that sometimes includes nights. It progresses into reliability and platform work that is well paid, deeply technical, and invisible to everyone until the day it stops. When you are good at this, an entire organisation quietly depends on you. It is also the fastest route on this page from a first job into genuine responsibility, because competence shows up immediately and cannot be faked. Starts below development and closes much of the gap with experience and certification, which counts for more here than anywhere else in the field. The night-and-weekend component is real and is part of what is being paid for. People who stay calm when something is broken and everybody is watching, and who would rather fix the cause than the symptom even at two in the morning.
Testing and quality engineering after the degree, and it is the row people fall into rather than choose Reading a specification against a system and finding where they disagree; then automating that so it happens on every change. The good version of this job is programming; the bad version is repetition, and which one you get depends heavily on the employer. If the probe questions about the name with an apostrophe and the two people buying one ticket were the ones you enjoyed, this is that instinct as a living. Someone has to be the person who thinks of the case nobody thought of. Below development at entry and the gap narrows only if you move into the automated half. Being treated as a lesser role is a real feature of this row, and it is worth knowing that going in rather than discovering it. People who are pleased rather than annoyed to find a fault, and who can be the bearer of bad news repeatedly without it souring.
Data and analytics after the degree, and prefigured by the Mathematics choice at Class 11 A laptop, a dataset and a question somebody else asked, most of it spent finding out why the numbers do not agree with each other. The analysis is the short part; making the data trustworthy is the job. Your work changes a decision rather than shipping a feature, and you are frequently the only person in the room who knows whether the number is real. That is a specific kind of influence and it arrives early. Comparable to development and it varies more by industry than by skill. The mathematical end pays best and asks most, and it is the end the Class 11 subject choice quietly decides. People who liked the probability and counting questions more than the building ones, and who are sceptical by temperament about numbers other people are pleased with.
Security Nearly always another job first. Very few people enter this straight from a degree. years after the degree, usually by moving sideways out of operations Monitoring, investigating, patching, and arguing with colleagues who find the safe way inconvenient. The dramatic version exists and is a small fraction of the work; most of it is making unglamorous things consistent. You are reasoning against a person rather than against a machine, which is a different and more interesting kind of problem — and when it matters, it matters more than anything else on this page. Among the better-paid rows once you are in it, and hard to enter directly, which is most of why. Certifications carry real weight here in a way they do not elsewhere in the field. People who instinctively ask how something could be abused, and who can hold that posture for years without becoming insufferable about it.

What decides the first job is what you can show you have built, and a student who attends for three years and builds nothing arrives at the end holding a certificate that employers in this field weigh very lightly. That is the central cost of this route, it is paid in the years while you are still choosing how to spend them, and almost nobody says it out loud to a first-year.
The two routes are treated differently at the recruitment door Whatever anybody says about merit, many large employers hire four-year engineering graduates and three-year computing graduates into different roles, at different pay, on the same campus in the same week. This is widely reported rather than officially published, and this page will not pretend to a number. Two things follow. It is a reason to build something of your own, because that is what overrides the sorting. And it is a reason to look at what a specific college's graduates actually do rather than at the sector.
Converting usually costs another two years The ordinary way from a support or testing job into a development one is a master's, and that is two more years and another entrance sat at twenty-one. It is a real and well-trodden route rather than a failure. It is also time and money that the person who built things during the degree did not have to spend.
What you learn goes out of date faster here than anywhere else on this site The specific tools of your first job may be gone within a decade, and you will re-learn the surface of this field several times over a career. The underlying ideas do not move, which is the argument for caring about the parts of the degree that feel least immediately practical — and for treating anyone selling you a course in this year's tool with a degree of suspicion.
The entry level is the part most exposed to being automated The simplest programming tasks are the ones software has become best at doing, and the work that used to be given to somebody in their first year is the work most changed by it. Nobody credible knows how far that goes, and this page will not guess. What follows either way is the same as the first cost: the parts that are hardest to automate are deciding what to build and noticing what is wrong, and neither is what a syllabus teaches.
The advice you will get is being paid for No field on this site has a larger industry selling courses to people trying to enter it, and the loudest, most confident guidance you will find online comes from people earning from the click. That does not make it wrong. It does mean the person telling you which language to learn this year should be someone with nothing at stake in your answer.

If you felt resistance, that counts. This is the field people arrive at believing one thing about it — that it is closed without science, or that the degree is what gets you in, or that the money is automatic — and all three are wrong in different directions. If you read the questions on the previous page and found yourself arguing with them before answering, this field will use that for a very long time, and it does not much care which stream you took. If what appeals is that it looked like an easier way into a technical career than engineering, that is true of the door and not of the work, and it is far cheaper to find that out now than in the third year.

No official count of how many people take this route exists either, which is why this page never says how large it is.
