Entrepreneurship · where it leads

What starting something actually leads to

Most people picture a founder on a stage. A few end up there. Far more run a shop, a studio, a workshop or a service with three employees and no story anybody wants to hear, and that is what this field mostly is. This is what the work is, what it costs, and who tends to find it bearable — written so that deciding against it counts as the page working.

How you actually get there

WhenWhatWhat it means
After a degree, a job, or a trade Learning a domain, then starting in it The commonest route and the one least often described. Most people who start something workable knew the trade first — as an employee, a family member or an apprentice — because knowing where the problems actually are is worth more than any course. Nothing about this route needs deciding at seventeen.
After Class 12 A BBA in entrepreneurship or family business These degrees exist at several universities and some are built explicitly around family businesses, entered through a general management entrance rather than anything specific to this field. Be clear about what they teach, though: a BBA teaches how a business is run — accounts, marketing, operations, people — which is genuinely useful for operating something that already exists and is not the same as starting one. Most people who start things have no BBA and no MBA, and those skills can be hired once there is something to run. What cannot be hired is knowing which problem is worth solving, and no degree teaches that.
Any time, including now Starting something small Worth listing as a route because it genuinely is one. A stall, a service, a repair, something made and sold — at a scale where failing costs a weekend. Almost nobody takes this seriously at fifteen and it is the only preparation this field has.

There is none. No exam, no licence, no register, no qualification, and nobody whose permission you need. That is unusual enough on this site to be worth stating rather than implying: engineering has no licence but has an entrance, and government services has no entrance but has an examination later. This has neither. Anybody may start something tomorrow, which is the field's genuine appeal and also the reason nothing will tell you whether you should.

What you can qualify with

No subject is specified — open to PCM, PCB, PCMB, Commerce, Arts.

Nothing chosen at fifteen closes this field, because nothing opens it either. The Commerce stream helps with the accounting you will end up doing yourself, and that is the whole of the connection.

Four ways this actually happens

BranchDecidedWhat the days areWhy anyone does itMoneyWho it suits
The family business often before you were consulted, which is the difficulty Somebody else's system, somebody else's suppliers and staff who knew you as a child. The work is real and the authority is complicated, and modernising anything means arguing with people you cannot resign from. You inherit a working thing, which is an enormous head start, and you can make it better rather than making it exist. Whatever the business makes, which is not the same as what you are paid, and the distinction is often unclear for years. It is the most secure row here and the least separable from the rest of your life. People who can be patient with an institution that predates them, and who would rather improve something than begin something. It suits far fewer of the people it is expected of than anybody admits.
A small business of your own by starting, and reversibly for longer than people think Selling, buying, paying, fixing, apologising and doing the books at night. The variety is the appeal and the absence of anybody to escalate to is the cost. It is yours, at a scale where you can hold all of it in your head, and the decisions are actually decisions rather than recommendations upward. Irregular in both directions and slow to stabilise. It can be a good living and it is rarely a fast one, and the first years are usually worse than the equivalent job. People who can act without permission and would rather be responsible than comfortable.
A venture built to grow Investors, and the obligations that arrive with them. by taking outside money, which is the point of no return Building, selling and raising, usually all three in the same week. The pace is set by the money rather than by the work, and the job changes from making the thing to managing the people making it faster than founders expect. The ceiling is higher than anything else here, and a small number of these change what a lot of people do daily. Nothing for a long time, then a wide range with most of the mass at the bottom of it. The stories are drawn from the tail and are not a guide to the distribution. People who can live with sustained uncertainty and being publicly judged on incomplete work. Far fewer people than currently want it, and this row's description of itself is the least reliable on the site.
Working inside somebody else's early company after a degree, and easily reversed Broad, unglamorous and fast. You do several jobs, most of them badly at first, and you watch decisions being made at close range. It is the cheapest way to find out whether you want the founder's version. You learn what it is actually like without carrying the risk, and if you decide against it you have lost nothing and gained a skill. Usually below a large employer's, sometimes with a share of the company that is worth nothing far more often than people plan for. Almost anybody considering this field, which is why it is here. If you are not sure, this row is the answer rather than the compromise.

What it costs

CostWhat that means in practice
There is no exam, so nothing will tell you no Every other field on this site has a moment where the world gives you a result. This one does not, and that cuts both ways: nobody can stop you, and nobody will tell you early that this is not working. People stay years past the point where they knew, because there is no result to point at.
Most of it is not the part that gets described Chasing payment, paperwork, staffing, apologising, and doing the accounts on a Sunday. The story afterwards is about the decisions; the years are about the admin. Anyone choosing this on the strength of the story is choosing something they have not seen.
Who can afford to fail is not evenly distributed This is the fact the field is quietest about and the one that decides most outcomes. A family that can absorb a year without income, somewhere to live, a degree to fall back on, people who can introduce you — these determine who gets to try at all, and treating their absence as a lack of courage is both wrong and cruel. If your plan requires your family to carry a bad year, that is part of the plan and belongs in it.
It does not stay in working hours There is no version of this that is contained. It follows you into evenings, holidays and other people's weddings, and the people around you carry it without having chosen it. That is bearable for some households and corrosive in others, and which yours is is worth knowing before rather than after.
Most of them close Most new businesses do not survive their first years, and that is normal rather than shameful — but "it was a learning experience" is a sentence written afterwards by people who could afford the lesson. Plan for the ordinary outcome and let the good one be a surprise.

If you felt resistance, that counts. This is the only field here that nobody can refuse you and nobody will grant you. If you read the costs — especially the third one — and still recognised yourself, that is worth something. If what appeals is not having a boss, that is a reason to look at the last row rather than the third, and to look at it soon rather than at twenty-six.

Everything above is judgement, not data. It cites no document and no checked date. This is the one field on this site with no exam pages behind it either, so there are no sourced figures anywhere near this page — which is itself worth knowing when you compare it to the others.
