Government Services · where it leads

What government service actually leads to

More people want this than any other kind of work in the country, and most of them are aiming at something they cannot apply for yet. The roles people picture almost all require a degree first; what opens straight out of school is different work, in large volume, and rarely described honestly. This is what the doors are, what the work is, and what it costs — written so that deciding against it counts as the page working.

How you actually get there

WhenWhatWhat it means
After Class 10 Multi-tasking and constable recruitment Real doors, opening a full year before almost anything else on this site, and among the largest recruitments in the country by number of applicants. The constable route carries a physical standard as well as a written paper, and that is the criterion most likely to decide the matter regardless of marks — find out what it is before anything else. Neither of these is a lesser version of the Class-12 route; they are different work, and people move upward from them through departmental examinations over a career.
After Class 12 Clerical, assistant and data entry posts across ministries and departments The main school-leaving door, and the honest description is that it recruits to office work — records, data entry, counter and assistant posts — rather than to anything anyone puts on a poster. It is secure, it is pensioned, it starts early, and it is a genuinely good outcome for a great many people. The railways recruit at this level too, on a comparable scale, through their own boards; that door is not yet in this catalogue and belongs in it.
After a bachelor's degree, in any subject The civil services, graduate-level recruitment, banking, and state services **This is where almost everything people mean by "government job" actually sits**, and it is the most useful line on this page. The civil services, the graduate-level staff selection recruitment, officer posts in banking and most state commission recruitment all require a degree — in any subject, which is the second useful part. Nothing about your stream or your degree subject decides this. What decides it is having a degree at all, and having years left inside the age window when you get it.
After joining, over a career Departmental examinations and promotion The door people forget, and the reason entering at a clerical post is not a ceiling. Departments run their own examinations for advancement, and a person who joins at eighteen and passes them can end a career well above where an outsider would guess. It is slower than entering higher, it is real, and nobody advertises it because nobody sells coaching for a job you already have.

Nothing licenses you for government work. There is no council, no registration and no qualification that certifies you as fit for it — which is engineering's answer again, and means something different here, because the gate is the recruitment process instead, and it is the longest one on this site. A written examination, usually in stages; for many posts a skill test or a physical standard; a medical examination; verification of your documents and your character; and then a probation period after you are appointed. Two things follow. The gate does not close when you clear the paper, and small discrepancies in names and documents matter years before anyone tells you they will. The other gate is age: most recruitments have an upper limit, so the number of attempts is finite and the clock starts at eighteen whether or not you are using it.

What you can qualify with

No subject is specified — open to PCM, PCB, PCMB, Commerce, Arts.

Nothing chosen at fifteen closes this field, and very little chosen at seventeen changes it either. The recruitments ask for a pass — Class 10, Class 12, or a degree in any subject — rather than for a stream. If you are choosing a degree with this field in mind, the useful criteria are cost, distance from home and how much time it leaves you, not the subject on it.

Five working lives in government service

BranchDecidedWhat the days areWhy anyone does itMoneyWho it suits
Clerical and office posts at the exam you clear, and by the post you are allotted rather than chosen A fixed place, a fixed day and a queue of things that must be done accurately. The work is procedural by design, because a process that depends on brilliance is a process that fails. Hours are more predictable than almost any private equivalent. It is secure, it is pensioned, and the thing you are maintaining actually matters to the people on the other side of the counter. That is a reasonable thing to want and it is usually described as settling. Modest and, more importantly, known — the scale is published, the increments are automatic, and the allowances follow the posting. Predictability rather than height is what this row offers, and for a great many households that is the point. People who are accurate, patient, and content to do necessary work that nobody notices when it goes right. Not people who need to see their own fingerprints on an outcome.
Police and armed police at the physical standard, before the written paper decides anything Shifts, deployment, and long periods away from home. Physically demanding in a way no other row here is, and it does not stop being so as you get older. Much of the job is presence and paperwork rather than incident. You are the part of the state that turns up. For people who want that and can carry it, no office role compares, and the bond among people who have done it together is real. Comparable to the clerical rows at entry, with allowances that depend heavily on where you are posted. The pension and the security are the substance of it. People who are physically robust, keep their temper under provocation, and can accept being sent where they are sent. It suits fewer of the people drawn to it than it should, because it is chosen for the uniform.
Technical and specialist posts A technical qualification first; this row is entered with one, not without. before applying, by the qualification you already hold Actual technical work — inspection, measurement, drawing, testing, supervision — on public infrastructure, with the scale and the timelines of the state rather than of a firm. The things you work on are used by everybody and outlast you. Engineers in departments build at a scale that private employers of the same salary do not approach. Better than the clerical rows and below what the same qualification earns in private industry. The trade is security, hours and scale against pay, and people make it deliberately in both directions. People with a technical bent who would rather build something large and slow than something fast and owned by somebody else.
Officer-level administration A degree in any subject first. There is no route into this out of Class 12. years after school, by rank in a national or state ranking Meetings, files, decisions with incomplete information, and the public. Much less dramatic than the picture and much more consequential than the picture admits — the decisions are usually procedural and they land on very large numbers of people. The scope is genuinely unusual. Very few careers put a person in their twenties in a position to change how something works for a whole district. Salaried on a published scale, with the substance in the security, the pension and what comes with the post rather than in the figure. Nobody enters this row for the pay and everybody knows it. People who can decide without certainty, be accountable in public, and stay interested in a problem for the years it takes. Not people who need credit.
Public sector and banking after a degree, through separate recruitment Branch and operational work, targets, customers and credit decisions. It feels much more like a company than a department does, with the security and the transfer liability of the government still attached. It is the row that combines commercial work with public-sector terms, and for people who want both it is the only place that offers them together. Generally the best of these rows early on, and it flattens sooner than private banking does. Transfers are frequent and are a real part of the compensation question. People who want commercial work without commercial insecurity, and who are willing to move.

What it costs

CostWhat that means in practice
The years are spent whether or not you get in, and there is no partial credit This is the cost that separates this field from every other on this site. A degree half-finished is still two years of a degree; an exam not cleared is nothing you can show anybody. People spend their early twenties preparing, and those who do not get in emerge with the time gone and no qualification gained. Anyone entering this should have a second thing they are also building, and should decide in advance how many years they will give it.
The age window closes, and it is the rule that governs the plan Attempts are finite because eligibility ends. That means the years you spend preparing before you are even eligible are spent from the same budget as the ones after, which is why starting early is usually worse than starting well. Find the limit that applies to the post you want, count backwards, and make the plan fit inside it.
Where you live will be decided by somebody else Posting and transfer come with the job, and for many roles they recur throughout a career. This decides more about your life — where your family is, what your children's schooling looks like, whether you see your parents — than the job title ever will, and it is almost never part of how the field is imagined at seventeen.
The picture is authority and the work is process Most posts, most days, are the careful application of a rule to a person who does not entirely fit it. That is genuinely important work and it is not what draws people in. Anyone joining for the standing rather than the substance finds this out slowly and cannot easily leave, because the security that made it attractive is also what makes it hard to walk away from.
An entire industry profits from your continuing to try Coaching is a very large business and its incentives are not identical to yours: it is paid whether you clear or not, and paid again if you attempt again. That does not make it useless, and it does mean the advice you get about whether to keep going should come from somebody with nothing at stake in the answer.
You will be judged by people who wanted this for you In a great many families this is the respected outcome, which makes it unusually hard to decide against on the merits. If the reason it appeals is that it would settle something at home, that is worth naming to yourself now rather than at twenty-six, and it is not the same reason as wanting the work.

If you felt resistance, that counts. The security is real and it is a rational thing to want; nobody choosing this needs to be talked out of the reasons. What is worth being honest about is the arithmetic — that the roles you are picturing need a degree you have not started, that the window is finite, and that the years spent are gone whether or not the result comes. If you read the questions on the previous page and found yourself redesigning the queue, this field will use that for forty years. If what appeals is the nameplate, that is a real answer too, and far cheaper to arrive at now than at twenty-eight.

SSC MTS: dates, eligibility and the real denominators →

Everything above is judgement, not data. It cites no document and no checked date, unlike the exam pages — and this page carries no numbers at all, which matters more here than elsewhere, because this is a field discussed almost entirely in vacancy counts and success ratios. Every such number in circulation comes from sources that disagree with one another, and the commissions' own sites could not be read. Where a figure earns its place it will appear on an exam page with a document behind it.
