What a science degree actually leads to
Science is the field people arrive at as often as they choose it, and it is described to them worse than any other. The picture is a laboratory and a discovery; the reality is that the degree is the first quarter of the qualification, that most of the work is the experiment not working, and that the routes out of it are wider and less glamorous than either the picture or the disappointment suggests. This is what the work is, what it costs, and who tends to find it bearable — written so that deciding against it counts as the page working.

How you actually get there

That is why this field has so few exams in this catalogue: the absence is a fact about how science admission works rather than a gap in the site. Worth knowing before you start: there is a national scholarship aimed specifically at students who take basic science after doing well in Class 12, it is merit-tested rather than means-tested, and a great many people who qualify for it never find out it exists. |

Those entrances are sat after a degree, so they are not in this catalogue — which makes them easy to miss, and they are the single most useful thing on this page for a reader who did not get the seat they wanted. |
Nothing licenses you as a scientist. There is no council, no register and no examination whose passing entitles anyone to the title — which is engineering's answer again, and it misleads badly here, because this is in practice the most gated field on this site. What gates it is the qualification. Research is done by people with a doctorate, and the doctorate is most of a decade past Class 12; the fellowship that funds it is won by examination years after you leave school. Teaching in a college or university needs a postgraduate qualification and either a national eligibility test or a doctorate — and the exact rule is being rewritten as this is published, so check it rather than trusting anybody's summary, this page included. Teaching in a school needs a teaching degree on top of yours and then a state recruitment test. The pattern is worth seeing whole: nobody stops you doing science, and almost nobody is paid to do it without a qualification that takes years to finish.
What you can qualify with
A science stream. Mathematics for the mathematics, statistics and physics half of the field; at least three of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics for the research institutes. — open to PCM, PCB, PCMB.
The science stream keeps all of this open and the choice inside it is what closes doors. Dropping Mathematics shuts the statistics and mathematics institutes and most of physics with them, and Applied Mathematics is where that happens to people who did not intend it — the subjects page has the detail, and the exam pages say what each body will accept.
Five working lives in science

That is worth naming for two reasons. It is not a disgrace — the routes out of a B.Sc. are real and this page lists them. And if it is your situation, the useful question is not whether you belong here but which of the five rows above you would actually want, because the ones who do badly are almost always the ones who never chose one. |
| The three-year degree on its own is the weakest qualification in this field | Almost everything on the jobs list needs the thing that comes after — the master's, the teaching degree, the doctorate. A B.Sc. by itself is not what any of those employers are hiring, and anyone treating it as the finish line finds that out in the year after they finish rather than in the year before they start. Plan the second qualification while you are doing the first. |
| Where you study decides more here than in most fields | An experimental subject cannot be taught without working equipment, and a research question cannot be found without somebody who has one. Neither is portable and neither can be self-taught, which makes this the opposite of law, where a library and a good mind go a very long way. Ask what the laboratories are actually like and whether the staff publish, and ask before you accept the seat rather than after. |
| The subject you love may not be the one with the jobs in it | Fields inside science have their own internal job markets, and they are not the same size. The parts of the subject that made you want to do this — the astronomy, the pure mathematics, the evolutionary biology — have far fewer positions than the parts nobody puts in a documentary. Nobody tells a fifteen-year-old that the field has a shape like this, and finding it out at twenty-four is expensive. |
| Nothing here rewards being nearly right | The whole discipline is built on being checked. Your result is not a result until somebody else can reproduce it, and a good deal of a scientific life is other people pointing out what is wrong with your work — in public, in writing, and often correctly. For some people that is the best thing about the job. For others it corrodes, slowly, and they usually did not know which they were when they started. |
If you felt resistance, that counts. Science is the longest route on this site and the one most often taken by default, and those two facts together are why this page is blunt. If you read the probe questions and found yourself wanting to know how anybody could be sure, this field will use that for forty years and there is no other field that uses it as directly. If you are here because something else did not work out, that is worth saying to yourself plainly — and then choosing one of the five rows above deliberately, because the people who do badly in this field are almost never the ones who lacked the marks. They are the ones who never decided.
