The second question
Every job on this site
Most people arrive knowing the job rather than the field. Nobody says “I am interested in law” — they say they want to be a judge. Start here if that is you.
Each row says when the choice is actually settled, what stands between the degree and the work, and which exams reach it. If a job here turns out not to be what you thought, the field it belongs to is one link away, and that is the question worth asking first.
Law
To practise: Enrolment with a State Bar Council, and the All India Bar Examination. A law degree on its own does not make you a lawyer.
| Job | What it is | Decided | Exams that reach it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Litigation | Arguing cases in court, and the years of drafting and waiting that surround the twenty minutes anyone sees. | after the degree | CLAT |
| Corporate and transactional | Contracts and diligence for companies. The best-paid door into law, and the one furthest from a courtroom. | after the degree | CLAT |
| Judiciary | Sitting as a judge, reached by a second competitive exam after the degree rather than by practice. A state judicial services examination, sat after the degree. This is the one job here that needs a decision the other three do not. | after the degree | CLAT |
| Policy, academia and public interest | Research, teaching and litigation for causes. Usually the reason people say they want to do law, and usually the least paid. An LLM, and UGC-NET to teach. | after the degree | CLAT |
Engineering
To practise: No licence, and no registration. Unlike law, medicine or architecture, nothing stands between the degree and the work — which also means nothing protects the title. What you can show you have built does the job a licence does elsewhere.
| Job | What it is | Decided | Exams that reach it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Software | Writing and maintaining software, which is where graduates of every branch end up more often than any other single outcome. | after the degree | JEE Main, JEE Advanced, BITSAT, MHT-CET (PCM group) |
| Core engineering — civil, mechanical, electrical | Designing, building and maintaining physical things. The work the branch names describe, and the only row here settled before you graduate. | seat allotment | JEE Main, JEE Advanced, BITSAT, MHT-CET (PCM group) |
| Research and higher study | A masters or a doctorate, then research — in a laboratory, a company, or a university. A masters, and usually GATE or an equivalent test to fund it. | after the degree | JEE Main, JEE Advanced, BITSAT, MHT-CET (PCM group) |
| Public-sector engineering | Engineering inside a government company — power, oil, transport, steel — entered by a national exam sat after the degree. GATE — the public-sector companies recruit on the score, with an interview after it. | after the degree | JEE Main, JEE Advanced, BITSAT, MHT-CET (PCM group) |
Only fields with a route page written appear here. The exam catalogue covers more fields than this page does — the exam finder lists all of them, and what a field feels like is where the ones written so far begin.
